Spending time outdoors and unplugging from technology provides well-documented mental and physical benefits. Studies show that exposure to nature reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. Spending just 20 minutes in nature significantly reduces stress markers. This break from the constant barrage of information and digital interactions calms the mind, promotes relaxation, and reduces anxiety and depression symptoms.

Physically, outdoor activities like walking, hiking, and cycling offer cardiovascular benefits by increasing heart rate and blood flow, which improve heart health and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Alternatively, excessive screen time has been linked to a wide range of negative mental and physical health effects. Constant exposure to digital devices, particularly social media, has been associated with a higher risk of anxiety and depression. Physically, prolonged screen use contributes to sedentary behavior, which increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.

Unplugging from technology provides numerous evidence-based benefits for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Key advantages include improved sleep quality, reduced stress and anxiety, enhanced focus and productivity, stronger social connections, physical health benefits, and more.

The Global Day of Unplugging has been celebrated annually in March since 2009. Whether it is 1 hour or 24 hours, at some point during the first weekend of March, people all over the world will step away from their screens and intentionally shift to an offline activity, and an in-person interaction. See our list of Unplugged program offerings designed to help you and your loved ones do just that.
