PROGRAM REMINDERS
Our programs are offered year-round and are taught by American Red Cross certified and trained instructors.
Completion of class does not guarantee advancement to the next level. For children under 5 who are just learning to swim, a minimum of two sessions of repeated lessons is recommended. Children under 8 may need additional practice before mastering each level of swimming which may take several sessions before moving to the next level.
We do not offer make-up lessons unless canceled by Conejo Recreation & Park District. A full description of the refund policy can be found at the bottom of your receipt or by visiting our REFUND INFO & FAQ.

Otters (Ages 5 – 10 years) Builds on skills from Dolphins, emphasizes strength, endurance, and coordination of freestyle. Introduces backstroke, breaststroke, and treading water. Participants should be comfortable swimming at the surface of the water for at least 15 yards with rhythmic breathing then roll into a back float unassisted. This course is offered in group and semi-private instruction. | |
Stingrays (Ages 5 – 12 years) Builds on skills from Otters, with extended instruction in the coordination of freestyle, backstroke, and treading water. Introduces the breaststroke and the butterfly kick. Participants must be able to swim 25-yards of freestyle (with side breathing) and backstroke. Barracudas (Ages 6 – 12 years) Builds on skills from Stingrays, with extended instruction in the coordination of breaststroke and butterfly. Focuses on endurance, stroke development, starts, and finishes. Introduces intervals, flip turns, and circle swimming. Participants must be able to swim 50-yards of freestyle (with side breathing), backstroke and breaststroke. This course is offered in group and semi-private instruction. | |
Sharks (Ages 10 – 14 years) Participants in this course are ready for the Swim Team and need stroke refinement and endurance training. Should be able to comfortably swim 50- yards each of all four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly). Private Instruction (Ages 2.5+) One participant to one instructor, designed around the individual’s swimming ability, needs, and level. All private instructions can be converted into semi-private instruction if both participants are around the same swimming ability. Private Instructions are limited and fill quickly. Adult Beginner (Ages 18+) This class offers a chance for participants to reach their swimming goals in a fun, motivating, and safe environment. This class is geared towards beginners and should not be taken by individuals who have advanced swimming experience. Learn how to effectively overcome your fear of water by learning the basics of floating, breathing, and kicking. Introduces the fundamentals of survival stroke with skills and drills to practice individually. This class is not offered every season and is held in semi-private instruction only. |
SPECIALTY CLASSES
CRPD Swim Team (Ages 8+)
The CRPD Swim Team is a novice team that prepares athletes for competition by focusing on speed, endurance, refining strokes, and physical conditioning. Workouts are structured by age and ability providing workouts in a fun and collaborative social setting for all athletes. Swimmers must be proficient in the following to be eligible for the CPRD Swim Team:
- Freestyle for 50 Yards - Child can demonstrate correct reaching arms, fast kicks, and side breathing, using streamline off the wall.
- Backstroke for 50 Yards - Child can demonstrate correct straight arms, fast flutter kicks, using streamline off the wall.
- Breaststroke for 25 Yards - Child can demonstrate correct breaststroke arms alternating with breaststroke kick (not scissor kick), breathing during the pull.
- Butterfly Kick for 15 Yards (Dolphin Kick) - Child can kick with legs together, toes pointed, kicking from the hips (not the knees).
- Tread Water for 1 Minute - Child can stay afloat using sculling arms, and legs keeping their head above water without touching the bottom or wall.
- Demonstrate Tuck/Pike Surface Dive - Child can front float at surface then bring body into Tuck or Pike position with head down, and swim headfirst to the bottom.
While some equipment is provided for swim workouts, participants are required to supply their own swimsuit, goggles, towels, and swim fins. A CRPD Swim Team swim cap will be provided on the first day of practice. Search course number C800 for more detailed information.
Homeschool Swim Team (Ages 8+)
The Homeschool Swim Team provides opportunities for local homeschools to meet and train in a fun and team-oriented environment. Learn effective and efficient turns, starts, and finishes for all four competitive strokes. Practice drills and swim sets tailored to individual levels and endurance. Athletes should be able to swim 25-yards of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke comfortably. This class should not be taken by swimmers that do not know how to swim or are uncomfortable in the water. This class is not offered every season. Stroke Technique and Workout (Ages 14+)
Improve stroke technique, endurance, and confidence in the water. Instructed by experienced swim instructors and coaches. Learn how to swim faster with less effort in a small group setting at your own pace. This course is offered in group instruction only. Search course number C805 for more detailed information.
Intro to Water Polo (Ages 8+)
This course offers an introductory lesson into the sport of water polo. Introduces the fundamental skills, techniques, rules, and excitement of the sport. Taught by collegiate and area coaches. This class is held in 7-12 feet of water. Participants must be able to swim 50 yards (2 lengths) of a competition pool comfortably with rotary breathing. Participants should also be knowledgeable in the Back and Breast strokes. No previous water polo experience is needed. This class is not offered every season. Water Aerobic Workout – Deep Water (Ages 18+)
This class offers a conventional workout using the power of water and your body. Learn how great it feels to work hard in the water without it feeling like a workout. Low impact exercises taught by a seasoned and experienced water aerobics instructor to workout problem muscle and joint areas. Search course number C802 for more detailed information.
Noodle Aerobic Workout – Shallow Water (Ages 18+)
Explore the versatility of a pool noodle while improving core, strength, flexibility, balance, range of motion and proper form. Exercises in shallow water with movements from yoga, Pilates, ballet, and more. Gentle on the joints ideal for participants with arthritis. Search course number C802 for more detailed information.
Water Aerobic Workout – Shallow Water (Ages 18+)
This class is full of fun and energizing activities designed to help you reach your fitness goals. The exercises are performed in water that is chest deep and no swimming skills are needed to participate. The class utilizes different exercises and routines coupled with mild aerobics, all at the pace and comfort level of everyone. Search course number C804 for more detailed information.
Water Walkers Workout – Shallow Water (Ages 18+)
This class offers a conventional workout using the power of water and your body as you walk and jog. The low impact exercises are performed in shallow water and no swimming skills are needed to participate. The purpose of the class is to improve flexibility, range of motion, strength, muscle tone and cardiovascular endurance while using the resistance of the water to cushion the feet, knees and back. Springboard Diving (Ages 7-17)
Introduces fundamentals of competitive springboard diving to beginners while intermediate divers refine their skills. Get coached at your level in a small and controlled group setting by the current Cal Lutheran University Dive Coach. Dive class participants must successfully execute basic skills before moving on to more advanced skills. All participants must be able to swim 25-yards freestyle and perform a dive from the edge of the pool. This class is not offered every season. Search course number 3409 for more detailed information.
Aquatic Summer Fun Camp (Ages 8-12)
Have fun in the sun at the Community Pool at CLU with other youth from the community. Receive daily swim instruction in all four competitive strokes. Introduction to the sports of Water Polo and Springboard Diving is also included. Take daily hikes, play interactive games, and end the day in the pool. Light snacks are provided throughout the day. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards (one length of a competitive pool) unassisted and without rest. This camp is not offered every season. Recreational Swim
Dive into the fun with Recreational Swim! Families are invited to enjoy the designated open swim area at our pools! There is an entrance fee for each person entering the gate, whether you plan to swim or not. No need to make a reservation, just show up and pay at the entrance. Please keep in mind that Recreational Swim guests won't have access to the lap lanes during those times.
Recreational Swim will resume February 15th.

Refund & Make-Up Policy
Please plan your schedule accordingly in order to keep refunds to a minimum. A full refund less $5 will be granted if the Aquatics office is notified at least TWO business days (Monday- Friday) prior to the start of swim class. This gives our Aquatics staff time to find a replacement for your space in the class, complete all necessary paperwork, and notify the instructor. A refund will be granted on a pro-rated basis if the Aquatics office is notified prior to the date of the second class.
REFUNDS WILL NOT BE GRANTED after the second day of the class. Requests for a refund after the published start time of the second class will not be granted. EXAMPLE: Class starts at 5:00pm, requesting a refund at 5:01pm will not be granted. Failure to attend or “No Shows” will not be granted a refund.
All American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Lifeguard Review, Lifeguard Instructor, or Water Safety Instructor courses are subject to a $15 cancellation fee. Transfers and refunds are not granted within 5 business days prior to the start of the class.
REFUND CONSIDERATIONS
We understand that on rare occasions life throws us curveballs that cause us to change our scheduled plans. Refunds will be granted after the second day for a medical emergency. Refunds will only be granted with a hand written doctor’s note on a formal letter from the DATE posted. EXAMPLE: Your child is sick from the second day of class, but the doctor’s note is dated from the fourth day, you will only be refunded the classes after the fourth day.
AQUATICS TRANSFER POLICY
Transfers must be made TWO business days before the start of the class during business hours (9:00am-5:00pm M-F). Transfers to a new session will not be granted once a session has already started. Transfers after the start date, and only within the first two classes, will be charged for the days they were enrolled.
AQUATICS MAKE-UP POLICY
Due to the high demand for swim lessons and the intricate scheduling of instructors, WE DO NOT ALLOW ANY MAKE-UP LESSONS. However, we understand that due to uncontrollable circumstances you may miss a class.

- Swim Lessons: How do I register for class?
- You can register for a class online by clicking the REGISTER FOR CLASSES button at the top right corner of the website.
- How to I check if a class is available?
- Visit https://secure.crpd.org/register/
- Type the Group Name in the keyword section of the page (when searching for Private Instruction, use quotations).
- Uncheck the box that says Show Full and Cancelled Classes.
- Click Search.
- Swim Lessons: Does it cost money to be on a waitlist?
- No.
- How/Can I request a teacher?
- Yes, you can request a teacher; however, we can not guarantee they will teach that specific class. We try to accommodate your request to the best of our ability. Talk to a pool manager and tell them the name or type of teacher you need 1-2 weeks prior to a session starting.
- Can I get a refund?
- Please visit our REFUND & MAKE-UP POLICY section at the top of this FAQ tab, for information regarding refunds.
- What are your pool hours?
- Click the BOOK A LAP LANE button at the top of the page for information regarding reserving a lap lane and open recreational swim hours.
- What’s the difference between lap swim & rec swim?
- Lap swim is available by reservation for individuals who are looking to reserve a lap lane to swim or walk. Non-reservation holders can “walk-in” and pay the posted entry fee in cash.
- Recreational swim is open times for families to play in the shallowest section of our pool.
- Can I come in and swim early?
- No, other classes and programs are being conducted or a lifeguard is not on duty.
- Are you affiliated with the university?
- No, we are only on their campus. We are operated and maintained by the Conejo Recreation and Park District.
- Can I swim in the “Big Pool” or the “Samuelson Aquatic Center (SAC)”?
- Yes, by reservation only.
- Click the BOOK A LAP LANE button at the top of the page to book a lap lane at the Samuelson Aquatic Center.
- The Samuelson Aquatic Center does not have recreational swim or use of the diving boards.
- Are Cal Lutheran University Students and Faculty Free?
- No, reservations must be made to swim in the Community Pool at CLU or the Samuelson Aquatic Center during designated lap swim times.
- Free lap swim hours are available to Faculty and Students during specific times in the day. Visit the University’s website to view those hours.
- Is the pool handicap accessible?
- Yes, we are able to assist people who are handicapped with a lift device. Please let the staff know if you would like assistance with the lift.
- Is the pool available for birthday parties?
- Call the Aquatics Office at 805-241-0894 for more information.
- What temperature is the water?
- We keep the water between 80°- 84°
- Is your pool chlorine or salt?
- It is chlorinated.
- Where are you located?
- We are on California Lutheran University’s campus in the northwest corner of Mountclef Boulevard and Olsen Road.
- Do I have to pay even if I’m not swimming?
- Anyone entering the facility must pay the posted entry fee. Individuals not willing to pay the entry fee can spectate from outside of the gate.
- Do you take credit cards?
- Yes, we take MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.
- Is my child required to wear a swim diaper?
- If he/she is not potty trained, yes.
- Swim diapers are available for purchase for $1 in the office should you forget to bring one.
- Do you provide towels?
- No, please bring your own.
- Do you have lockers?
- No.
- How old must a child be to come and swim alone?
- 8 years old.
- Can I bring my own floatation devices/can kids wear floats?
- Allowed: Puddle Jumpers, Noodles, swimsuits with a float built in, ring tubes; items must stay with the child. Life vests must be Coast Guard-Approved.
- Not Allowed: Water wings or water guns. Check with management if you are unsure about your floatation device.
- Is there a snack bar?
- No, but there are vending machines with snacks and drinks available for purchase.
- Can I bring in my own food/drinks?
- Yes, however, we do not allow glass or alcoholic beverages on deck.
- Is there a lost and found?
- Yes, ask a lifeguard when you come to the pool to assist you in finding any lost belongings.
- Does the pool close if it rains?
- The facility only closes for lightning or thunder.
- The facility will remain open when it rains.

- Can I swim while my child is taking lessons?

- Can I stay and swim with my child after their lessons?
- Yes, if the facility is open for Recreational Swim right after your lesson or you get approval from a manager.
- Anyone staying after their lesson for Recreational Swim will need to pay the posted entry fee.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING - C806
This course focuses on the job of a lifeguard in a swimming pool environment. Learn to prevent and respond to emergencies in and around the water. Teaches professionalism, first aid, rescue skills, and CPR. Includes Lifeguarding Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED. Participants MUST know how to swim Front Crawl with rhythmic breathing and Breaststroke. Successful participation in all sessions required! Classes will emphasize victim recognition, surveillance, equipment-based rescues, and includes for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED.
Prerequisites: participant must be 15 years of age; able to swim continuously for 300 yards; able to tread water for two minutes using legs only; able to retrieve a 10-lb brick from 7 feet of water and return it to the surface.
WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR - C809
This approximately 30-hour course helps you teach skills that may save a life, gain terrific work experience as an aquatics professional, earn money or join a volunteer team while you help people learn valuable skills. In addition, you will learn organizational and presentation skills that will help you in any career and make a difference in people’s lives. Whether you want to splash around with kids and teach them to swim, help children and adults refine their strokes, or teach diving safety techniques, you can do it as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
Prerequisites: Minimum age of 16. Fundamentals of Instructor Training Course (FIT). Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4, by swimming the following strokes: Front Crawl - 25 yards; Back Crawl - 25 yards; Breaststroke - 25 yards; Elementary backstroke - 25 yards; Sidestroke - 25 yards; Butterfly - 15 yards; maintain position on back for one minute in deep water (floating or sculling); tread water for one minute.
LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION TRAINING - C807
This course is designed to help participants achieve recertification in Lifeguard Training without having to take the full content course. This review course includes First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
Prerequisites: Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid/AED certification. Able to swim continuously for 300 yards; able to tread water for two minutes using legs only. Must be able to attend the full class.
FIRST AID/CPR/AED TRAINING - C808
The Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED blended learning course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants. The online portion features award-winning simulation learning – an interactive experience where you will respond to real-world emergencies in a virtual setting and practice the skills that will prepare you for the instructor-led classroom skill session. Allow 2 hours 45 minutes to complete the online portion if you are new to First Aid/CPR/AED training or 55 minutes if you have previously received certification. The online course must be completed prior to attending the classroom portion of blended learning.

Community Pool at CLU
The Community Pool at CLU is made possible thanks to the cooperation of California Lutheran University (CLU), the City of Thousand Oaks, and the Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD). CLU provided the land and supporting infrastructure, including parking. The City contributed $1.4 million, including a $99,000 federal government grant. CRPD contributed $1.9 million and is responsible for the ongoing maintenance, operation, and programming. The Conejo Valley Unified School District also played an important part in making this pool a reality through the disposition of surplus property.
The 140,500-gallon lighted community pool occupies 4,800 square feet with varying depths of three to five feet. Also included is a 1,350 square foot building with two restrooms, a chemical room, a mechanical room, an administrative area, and a 675 square foot shade structure. The pool is heated up to 84º.
Thousand Oaks High School Pool
Located immediately behind the gymnasium on the campus of Thousand Oaks High School. The competition pool is ten lanes wide and 25 yards in the North-South direction. The pool is 25 meters wide and the depth is 4 feet at the shallow end and 13 feet in the diving area. There are three springboards; two 1-meter and one 3-meter in height for diving. The small instructional pool is for children six years of age and under. It is a rectangular pool with dimensions of 15 x 25 feet and 1-1/2 feet deep at the ends, and 2 feet deep in the center. The office is located at the pool entrance. It is one of three locations used by our Recreation department for our Aquatics program during the summer months. The program offers swimming instruction, exercise classes, dive and swim teams for all age groups.

Newbury Park High School Pool
Located immediately behind the gymnasium on the campus of Newbury Park High School, 456 Reino Road, Newbury Park, California, 91320. The pool was completed and opened for use in August 1972, and refurbished in 1987 and 1998, and 2018. The facility includes a rectangular competition pool, instructional/training pool, equipment and storage rooms, office/guard room, and cashier's office.
The competition pool is ten lanes wide and 25 yards in the North-South direction. The pool is 25 meters wide. Pool depth is 4 feet at the shallow end and 13 feet in the diving area. Springboards were removed during the 2018 refurbishment. Lifeguard towers (3) are located around the pool to assure the safety of participants. The Instructional/training pool is for children three to seven years of age. The rectangular pool has dimensions of 30 x 60 feet. The pool depth is 2 feet at the ends and 3 feet in the center. One Lifeguard tower is located around the pool to assure the safety of participants.
The equipment and storage rooms are in the building adjacent to the competition pool and house the mechanical equipment (heaters, filtration system), chemicals, and pool maintenance equipment. The office/guard room is part of the equipment and storage building. Pool staff has personal storage areas, work areas, and toilet facilities. The cashier's office is located at the pool entrance and is strictly used for pool admissions, lost and found, and registrations for swimming classes. It is one of three locations used by our Recreation department for our Aquatics program during the summer months. The program offers swimming instruction, exercise classes, dive, and swim teams for all age groups.
